A 22-YEAR-OLD driver is in a critical condition after an horrific crash in Flint Mountain on Monday morning.
The man, from the Wrexham area, was driving a black Seat Ibiza car which was in collision with a red Vauxhall Vectra on the A5119 Northop Road at 7.17am.
The Seat Ibiza left the road and plunged 15 metres down an embankment. The driver, the sole occupant, was taken to Ysbyty Glan Clwyd in Bodelwyddan where he is currently in a critical condition.
The driver of the Vauxhall Vectra, a 33-year-old man who is also from the Wrexham area, was taken to the Countess of Chester Hospital with injuries which are not believed to be life-threatening.
Four paramedic teams were joined by three fire crews from Flint, Deeside and Mold. They were later joined by a rescue tender from Wrexham.
The fire fighters used cutting gear to release the driver of the Vectra.
Fire fighters spent nearly two hours in releasing the second casualty from his vehicle.
The roof of the Seat was first removed and the man, who has not been named, was carried up the steep slope by fire fighters and paramedics to a waiting ambulance.
The man’s injuries at the scene were considered so serious the North Wales air ambulance was called in to airlift him to hospital.
But bad weather prevented the aircraft from landing at the scene and a Sea King helicopter from RAF Valley was scrambled instead.
Northop Road was closed at the junction of the A55 and in the opposite direction near the garage in Flint until just after 1.18pm.
Inquires into the collision are underway and anyone who witnessed the incident, or who may have information, is asked to contact the Eastern Roads Policing Unit.
Officers are also keen to speak to anyone who saw the cars being driven prior to the collision to contact them on 0845 6071001 (Welsh language line) or 0845 6071002 (English language line).
