New lease of life for Victoria Hotel pub in Holywell

A HOLYWELL pub which was forced to shut after outbreaks of violence is to reopen its doors after almost five years.

But, The Victoria Hotel’s new owner, David Roberts, is hoping a membership system and over-25s policy will stop history repeating itself when he opens My Place nightclub on April 2.

He said: “Membership will be free, but people will have to sign up three or four days before they come to the venue.

“There will be a set of rules for members and if they break any of them they’ll be kicked out and will not be able come back.”

Mr Roberts, who bought the building in October, said he had been working closely with police and the licensing authority.

He added: “We’ll have very good door staff so hopefully everyone will feel very secure inside.”

Mr Roberts, a civil engineer, had developed a couple of properties before taking on the Victoria project.

He said: “I live in Holywell and I didn’t like to see the building lying empty.”

The building has undergone major refurbishment ahead of its opening.

“It’s a Grade II listed building so we couldn’t make any drastic changes,” Mr Roberts said.

“But because it has been empty since 2005 it had deteriorated quite a lot so we needed to bring it back up to standard.”

He plans to bring live acts to the venue and will have a resident DJ.

He said: “There are two floors and on Friday and Saturday nights we’ll have a live act on one floor and once that finished there’ll be a disco until 1am.”
