Football: Chairman despairs as Mynydd Isa are dissolved

FLINTSHIRE football has been stunned by the news that Mynydd Isa have withdrawn from the Cymru Alliance and will be no more, writes DAVID BERGIN.

The village club have just enjoyed their greatest season, finishing fourth in the league and runners-up in the NEWFA Challenge Cup at Wrexham’s Racecourse Ground in their final ever game.

Manager Gareth Thomas was told his services would be no longer required and he has been unveiled as manager of neighbours Buckley Town.

Isa chairman Ken Booth, who has been involved with the club for 16 years, said: “There were a number of factors involved, but it wasn’t a decision taken lightly.

”Up until last Friday, we tried to keep the club going, but it wasn’t to be.”

In a statement on Isa’s website, the two defining factors in the decision were a lack of manpower on the club’s committee, which stood at just three people after one member resigned, and “the breakdown in the relationship between Mynydd Isa Football Club and Argoed Sports Association (ASA)”.

Booth feels let down by the association, who own the land the club trains and plays on, and alleged: “The local sports association we were affiliated to didn’t look on us favourably and made it quite clear they couldn’t care less about our football club.

“Although there is cricket, bowls, and youth and senior-section football there, the ASA chose to make us pay for everything, which put an extra financial burden on the club. I think that was the straw that broke the camel’s back.

“We are tired of arguing, we are tired of fighting and we are tired of falling out with people. This is an amateur sport and it should be fun, but I don’t think they’ll be a Cymru Alliance side ever again in Mynydd Isa.”

The Chronicle contacted the ASA chairman but he was unable to give a full comment before we went to press as he was away, claiming he “knew nothing whatsoever” about Isa’s shock decision.

Mynydd Isa midfielder Joe Desormeaux and strikers Shaun Beck, of Flint Town United, and Stuart Hayes, of Mold Alexandra, have been named in the Cymru Alliance team of the year.
