Football: Late strike frustrates Buckley in Cymru Alliance clash with Holyhead Hotspur
BUCKLEY Town were seven minutes from going third in the Cymru Alliance before Holyhead Hotspur’s Chris Saxon spoilt the visitors’ party.
Fourth-placed Bucks, who unveiled loan signing from Colwyn Bay Tom McGill at the New Stadium on Friday, started on the front foot and on the balance of chances should have perhaps taken all three points on offer.
Harbourmen goalkeeper Mike Doutch was a contender for man of the match and started his impressive display by diving at the feet of McGill.
Holyhead hit back and Saxon sent an early warning of things to come when his 27th-minute shot crashed off the bar before McGill again went close for Buckley.
On 39 minutes, the visitors took the lead when Wes Brereton diverted a cross beyond Doutch’s flailing arm.
After the break, it was Buckley who had the chances to kill the game off with McGill spurning two one-on-one opportunities before Mark Orme saw his header hit the bar.
Bucks then were made to pay for their missed chances as with 83 minutes on the clock, Kenleigh Owen slipped the ball past the Buckley defence to that man Saxon who made no mistake.
And it could have been worse for Bucks as Owen himself saw his header flash the wrong side of the post on the stroke of full-time.
Tomorrow, Buckley host second-placed Llangefni Town in the clash of the weekend (7.30pm).
Ten-man Denbigh Town held on for a famous victory over Mold Alex on Saturday, competing a double over the Alyn Park outfit this season.
The 2-1 victory arrived courtesy of a 29th-minute Jamie Hobson penalty and a Jamie Duffy strike five minutes from time.
Sandwiched in the middle was a Graham Randles effort but it was not to be as Denbigh, who had Kevin Evans sent off late on, took the bragging rights.
Mold Alex travel to Llangollen Town on Saturday (2pm).
Cymru Alliance leaders Flint Town United were without a game at the weekend and continue their break from league action this Saturday when they host Penrhyncoch (2.30pm) in the league cup.
