Cymru Alliance: Flint Town United move clear at top with Mold Alexandra derby win

FLINT Town United took full advantage of Llangefni Town’s inactivity to open up a commanding lead at the top of the table on Saturday.

The Silkmen won their derby at home to Mold Alexandra 3-1 to move six points clear of second-placed Cefni, who do have two games in hand on the pacesetters.

Paul Davies’ side had already gone close through John Davies before Lee Jones opened the scoring in the 20th minute with a 25-yard free kick.

And the former Wrexham youth team defender repeated the trick 10 minutes later but this time with the aid of a deflection.

Mold, hurting after their midweek defeat to neighbours Buckley Town, fought back and reduced the deficit seven minutes after the restart through the returning Dave Pitson.

But it was Flint who sealed the points 15 minutes from time when the evergreen Jon Kenworthy played in captain Shaun Beck to score his 21st league goal of yet another prolific campaign.

The Silkmen – who won 1-0 at home to Lex XI last Wednesday night thanks to Paul Williams’ injury-time strike – now face two away games before they welcome Llangefni to Cae Y Castell for a potential title decider on March 27.

They head to Berriew on Saturday (2.30pm) and then third-placed Llandudno on Wednesday (7.30pm).

Seventh-placed Mold – who had Brett Jones sent-off late on against Flint – play host to Llandudno on Saturday (2.30pm) and then Ruthin Town on Tuesday (7.30pm).

Fourth-placed Buckley return to league action on Saturday at Lex XI (2.30pm).

Buckley, who booked their place in the semi-finals of the NEWFA Challenge Cup on Saturday, then entertain rock-bottom Gresford Athletic on Tuesday (7.30pm).

Mold, meanwhile, have announced that, with the help of Buckley, they have raised nearly £100 for injury victim Gary Burns.

The highly-rated defender or midfielder broke his leg in four places in Mold’s match against Berriew earlier this month.

Burns has been undergoing surgery and recovering in hospital in Shrewsbury, and the money raised from a raffle during last Tuesday’s derby clash between Mold and Buckley will go towards helping his family with travel costs.
