‘Business as usual’ as AD Waste taken over

FLINTSHIRE County Council has confirmed it is bringing its waste disposal contractor AD Waste in-house.

The Chronicle revealed exclusively last week that the move was on the cards after the arms-length company had stacked up debts estimated to reach half-a-million pounds by the end of the financial year.

A joint statement issued on Wednesday by council chief executive Colin Everett and AD Waste managing director John Davies said the takeover would go ahead following an independent review of its waste disposal options by financial consultants KPMG.

They said AD Waste, which employs 50 people, currently relies on Flintshire County Council for its main business, with more than 90% of turnover generated by the authority.

The statement added: “The medium and long-term waste management solution for the council will be delivered through the North Wales Waste Treatment Partnership, which has progressed rapidly over the recent past and is projected to have facilities open in five to seven years time.

“All waste management services provided to the public will remain unchanged.”

AD Waste do not manage any open landfill sites and currently take the council’s waste to a landfill site in Wrexham.

The statement added: “There is now going to be an intensive period of work activity and alignment of functions to maximise any efficiencies that can be made through the transfer of the company into the council.

“We anticipate that the transfer will be concluded before the end of March 2009.

“We confirm that through this action, AD Waste is financially viable and with the council’s support, as the sole shareholder, will continue to perform in its role as waste disposal contractor to the council and carry on its trade as normal.”
