Hockey – Watkiss stars on mixed day for Hall

BEN Watkiss fired four goals as Northop Hall 2nds got their season up and running on Saturday – but it was an afternoon to forget for the Smithy Lane outfit’s first team.

Having gone down on the opening day of the North West League Division Four campaign, Hall’s second string bounced back by romping to a 6-2 success at Triton.

After falling behind to their newly-promoted opponents, Hall never looked back once Watkiss netted from close range.

Andy Murray completed good work from Chris Staniforth to put them in front before Watkiss made it three with a well-timed deflection.

With Barry Dunn, Gareth Moore and Pete Ketland protecting Chris Howells wonderfully, the one-way traffic continued after the break with Watkiss going on to complete his hat-trick via another deflection.

But the goal of the match came from the influential Jack Iffla, who controlled Ketland’s ball into the D and, in the same movement, hammered home.

Hall are at home to Liverpool Sefton 2nds tomorrow.

Hall’s first team also play host to their Liverpool counterparts in North League Division Two (West), keen to put Saturday’s 9-1 home beating by Urmston behind them.

David Chacksfield linked up with Nick Critchley to score a consolation for Hall, who welcome captain Stuart Brown back into their defence tomorrow but are without attackers Critchley and Ian Randles.

Hall 3rds, after winning their opening game, were brought back down to earth on Saturday as they lost 1-0 to Wilms- low 2nds in North West League Division Seven (South).

Hall, featuring veteran defender Gareth Davies after a long-term injury, were guilty of allowing their Cheshire visitors far too much possession and space in midfield, although Richard Young did hit the woodwork twice.

Midfield general Stewart Tasker and sweeper Dave Singleton return for tomorrow’s trip to Alderley Edge 4ths.

Hall 4ths are still chasing their first Division Nine (South) point of the season after they went down 3-1 at South Cheshire 5ths.

Lewis Taylor, following good penalty corner play from Josh Smith and Chris Ferguson, netted for Hall, who host unbeaten Lymm 2nds tomorrow.

Man-of-the-match Joe Turner scored all of Hall Beavers’ goals in their 4-1 home blast of Alderley Edge on Saturday while Jason Roberts and Eric Durham made promising debuts.

Hall, who head to Chester tomorrow, were: Jake Ffoulkes, Jake Jones, Jacob Ellis, Harry Turner, Joe Turner, Thomas Preece, Eric Durham, Jason Roberts, Gemma Williams, Mike Williams, Kieran Homersley, Alistair Owen.
