EXHIBITIONS

CHESTER: January 10-March 4 - This Benevolent Institution - from its opening as an asylum in 1829, the Deva Hospital proved to be a progressive and innovative establishment. Local author Stan Murphy has recently completed 50 years with the NHS, many spent at this hospital, and he has provided the images and information for this foyer exhibition at Chester History & Heritage on Bridge Street Row.

CHESTER: January 4-March 31 - For King and Country - a photographic exhibition looking at the people behind the relentless drumbeat of war whose courage and sacrifices ensured our freedom, at Chester History & Heritage on Bridge Street Row.

CHESTER: December 4-February 13 - Secrets of Eternal Youth: Oral Histories from Chester - The Grosvenor Museum and Amphitheatre and the spaces in between have been used by young people for schooling and leisure for decades. Upton High School students have recorded the personal stories that make history recognisable and in this audi-visual exhibition, they explore the recollections of Chester citizens and interpret them using contemporary media, at the Grosvenor Museum Exhibition Gallery Two.

CHESTER: November 13-January 29 - Past Present Perfect - an exhibition showcasing innovative work by designers and makers based in Norway and Greater Manchester, responding to the theme of tradition with a contemporary twist at the Grosvenor Museum’s Newstead Gallery.

CHESTER: November 1-December 17 - Spotlight on Backford and Mollington - exhibition of images and information provided by Backford, Mollington and District Local History Society at Chester History & Heritage on Bridge Street Row.

CHESTER: October 1-December 17 - Cherry Grove Centenary - a look at the history of Cherry Grove School and the staff and pupils who were part of it over the past 100 years at Chester History & Heritage on Bridge Street Row.

CHESTER: September 11-January 9 - Reap and Tillage: The Vikings in Cheshire - an exhibition which explores the Viking heritage of Cheshire, looking at why they came here, how they lived and the evidence they left behind at the Grosvenor Museum Exhibition Gallery Two.

CHESTER: July 24-July 17 2011 - Workwear: Dressed For The Job - this small exhibition looks at both practical clothes and ceremonial uniform, contrasting a labourer’s cotton smock with a footman’s gold-braided livery and a hair stylist’s simple dress with an alderman’s fur-trimmed fown at the Grosvenor Museum Costume Gallery.

LIVERPOOL: December 15-16 - Matisse on Stage - step into the tranquil world of Matisse as depicted by first year Theatre and Performance Design and Technology students who present an exhibition of installations and sets inspired by the French artist at LIPA, Paul McCartney Auditorium, Mount Street. MANCHESTER: Until January 23 - Unstable States - John Ruskin and the Truth of Water - this display investigates how artists from Van de Velde to Turner have captured water in all of its “unstable states” using oil, atercolour and print at the Whitworth Art Gallery, Oxford Road. MANCHESTER: Until February 20 - Intuition - the Musgrave Kinley Outsider Art Collection at the Whitworth Art Gallery, Oxford Road. Victor Musgrave and Monika Kinley chose to collect artwork they felt was genuinely original and made by artists outside the mainstream. MANCHESTER: September 25-January 23 - The Land Between Us: place, power and dislocation - an exhibition exploring today’s notions of landscape and identity by juxtaposing historic and contemporary works of art at the Whitworth Art Gallery, Oxford Road. MOLD: December 4-January 15- On Performance- elements of theatricality link the works of Nichola Hope, Sarah Hope and Liam O’Connor whose drawings and paintings blend traditional methods with the reconstruction of images using current technologies and fantasy, as can be seen in this exhibition in the Oriel Gallery at Clwyd Theatr Cymru. WREXHAM: November 19-January 15 - Horse House by Eva Bartussek - exhibition of work by emerging German born but Swansea based photographer who is primarily interested in portraiture, at the Oriel Wrecsam in Rhossdu Road. Ring 01978 292093.

WREXHAM: November 19-January 15 - Echoes of Memory by Louisa Theunissen - working mainly in compressed charcoal, Thueunissen produces large-scale drawings of derelict houses, factories, shops and warehouses around Wales and this display of her work can be seen at the Oriel Wrecsam in Rhossdu Road.
