Your Champions: Brian Peers of Buckley nominated for Person of the Year

A DAD who devotes his spare time to helping disadvantaged children has been nominated for a Your Champions award.

Brian Peers of Muirfield Road, Buckley, has volunteered for more than 12 years for Chronicle-backed children’s charity Miles of Smiles.

Brian’s daughter Becky has nominated him in the Person of the Year category.

“For the last 10 years he has been the trip co-ordinator and he spends a lot of his personal time completing forms and visiting homes of children who have been nominated,” she said.

“As the trip gets closer he has a lot of work ensuring all names are correct, all medication is listed, the insurance details are correct and everyone has passports.

“When my brother and I were young we thought he spent too much time doing paperwork and not enough time with us. But once we got older we realised we had far more than a lot of people and were happy to help when we could.

“Although I’m sure he would say he has not done anything to deserve any recognition.”

Becky added: “I am so proud of him as are my brother and mum.”

Miles of Smiles is a volunteer-run Chester- based charity which arranges trips for sick, disabled and underprivileged children from Chester, Wirral and North Wales. It funds annual trips to Disneyland Paris and Lapland for 18 children, their parents and a doctor, but relies on fundraising and donations to meet the £37,000 cost.

Brian said: “It’s a very worthy charity and it’s great when you see the faces of the children when they get there.

“It’s a once-in-a-lifetime thing for them.”
