Your Champions: Deeside Domestic Abuse Safety Unit nominated as Team of the Year

A DEDICATED team which runs a support centre for victims of domestic abuse has been recognised for its tireless work.

Alyn and Deeside AM Carl Sargeant has nominated Deeside Domestic Abuse Safety Unit for a Chronicle/ScottishPower Your Champions award.

The unit relocated from its previous home on Deeside Enterprise Park off Rowleys Drive in Shotton to a new premises in Chester Road East earlier this year.

It is designed to be a one-stop shop for victims of domestic abuse, who are predominantly female, to receive all the support they need.

The staff offer free and confidential advice and help and operate a 24-hour helpline.

The specially trained domestic abuse safety advisers give advice on how to recognise signs of abuse, personal safety, how to access safe houses and ways to regain self-confidence and move on from the relationship.

Since the relocation in late April, staff have dealt with an average of 100 cases a month.

Mr Sargeant said: “This is a dedicated, hard- working team providing invaluable support to very vulnerable people who are trying to deal with distressing situations.”

The team at DASU is available for drop-in appointments from 10am-2pm on Mondays, Tuesdays and Fridays and from 10am-noon on Thursdays.

Mr Sargeant said: “Victims of domestic abuse need to be treated with care, dignity and respect and the Deeside Domestic Abuse Safety Unit ensures the right facilities are in place to provide the support they need.

“The staff work tirelessly for anyone needing the support and advice to get through the trauma of domestic abuse.”
