Courageous Chester schoolgirl is star of the show at Your Champions awards

COURAGEOUS Chester schoolgirl Hannah Jones emerged as the star of stars at the 2010 Trinity Mirror Cheshire/ScottishPower Your Champions awards ceremony.

The Christleton High sixth former – who has been battling a brain tumour while raising more than £70,000 for research into her condition – was declared Champion of Champions at the gala event.

An emotional film of her incredible story – presented by master of ceremonies for the evening Trevor Green of Sky and Granada TV – brought tears to the eyes of an audience made up of Trinity Mirror and ScottishPower representatives, civic dignitaries and individual winners of Your Champions awards and their families.

The evening began with an introduction from Carl Wood, publishing director Trinity Mirror Cheshire, who described the event as his favourite of the year.

He said: “I am very proud to be associated with these awards.

“You will see some real champions tonight and hear stories you will never forget.”

ScottishPower have been sponsoring the awards since their inception in 1987.

Raymond Jack, managing director (energy retail), said: “The judges felt selecting the winners from this year’s shortlist was almost as difficult as Anton Du Beke teaching Ann Widdecombe the salsa!

“The awards really bring home the vast amount of charitable work done in the region.”

Guest of honour was former world snooker champion John Parrott, who took part in a question and answer session with the audience before helping to hand over the awards to the overall champions in each of five categories.

There were six local winners in each category from Chester, Flintshire, Ellesmere Port, South Cheshire, Runcorn & Widnes and Wirral, vying for the title of overall champion Person, School, Team, Young Person and Sporting Champion.

The overall winners announced on the night were:

Young Person: Amy Griffin (Wirral).

Team: Deeside Domestic Abuse Safety Unit (Flintshire).

School: University Church of England Academy (Ellesmere Port).

Sport: Gary Wilson (South Cheshire).

Person: Leah Gorry (Runcorn & Widnes).

But it was 17-year-old Hannah Jones who earned a standing ovation when she went up to receive her Champion of Champions Award from John Parrott during the moving climax to the event.
