Your Champions: Good Companions of Holywell Hospital nominated for Team of the Year

A GROUP that has raised almost £50,000 for Holywell Community Hospital since it opened last March has been nominated for the Your Champions Team of the Year award.

The Good Companions of Holywell Hospital has raised a total of £48,000 since the facility opened. With the money they’ve been able to buy state-of-the-art medical equipment, donate furniture and provide a garden for the patients.

Chairman John Saunders said: “It has been an excellent year for us. We always have some kind of fundraising on the go.”

Events have included garden fetes and coffee mornings, while the group’s charity shop and hospital tea bar also generate cash.

The Good Companions has a committee of 30 people, with a waiting list for people who want to join in.

As well as fundraising, the group gets involved with local schools, who have been in to sing to patients and created artwork for the building.

They receive donations from a number of different groups, the latest being £4,700 raised by Clwyd Practical Classics car club.

John said: “The community really comes together to support the hospital. We are very pleased with the support we get from Holywell and the surrounding villages.”

A successful 18 months of fundraising was topped off when Princess Anne officially opened the hospital last month.

John said: “It really was the icing on the cake. It was a marvellous day and she really took the time to chat to everyone.”

Next on the group’s wish list is patio furniture for the hospital’s hard-working staff.

“We always ask the staff what is most needed in the hospital,” said John.
