Flint residents show support for tae kwon-do star Jade Jones

MEMBERS of an online community group have rallied together and taken to the streets of Flint to make sure everyone in the town gets behind Olympic hopeful Jade Jones.

Volunteers have hand-delivered 5,000 leaflets to homes and businesses encouraging people to gather in the Flint Sports & Social Club and show their support for Jade when she competes in the -57kg tae kwon-do competition at the London games next Thursday, August 9.

The production of the leaflets was sponsored by Aspen Blinds, which is based in Chester Road, Oakenholt. Flint  resident Melanie Buckley, who is a member of the Off Flint group on social networking website Facebook, coordinated the distribution of the flyers.

Melanie said: “It has been quite an operation to coordinate where all the leaflets were going. People have being coming to the house to pick them up and distribute them. We’ve had about 20 volunteers helping, it’s been brilliant and I want to say a big thank you to everyone who has been involved. I never imagined the response would be this great.

“Lots of people are putting them in their windows to show their support for Jade – it’s really heartwarming.

“There’s a real sense of pride in the town and a real community spirit. It’s all down to Jade and what she has achieved.”

There will be a big screen in the social club where people can watch the 19-year-old fight for gold on the  day.

Melanie added: “Everyone is welcome. ’ll definitely be down there and I hope lots of other people will be as well. I expect it will be packed out if she gets to the final as everyone will want to watch it together.

"The screening has been organised by the Off Flint Facebook group and we need to thank Lynda Leigh from the social club for supporting us and providing the venue.

“We are all behind her and will be there to cheer Jade on.”
