Airbus North Factory project recognised at Constructing Excellence in Wales Awards

A £71.4m project to create a new hi-tech composite wing assembly facility in Flintshire has received two national awards.

The project team – consisting of Airbus Operations Limited, construction and infrastructure company Morgan Sindall and its 12 supply chain partners – are working together to deliver the 52,000sqm Airbus North Factory in Broughton, Deeside.

Members of the team attended the Constructing Excellence in Wales Awards dinner, where they picked up accolades for integration and collaborative working and innovation.

The completed factory will enable the assembly of wings for the new A350XWB aircraft, which is regarded as pivotal in the development of the UK aviation industry.

Judges said they were impressed with the collaborative ‘one-team approach’ between all partners and that the clear vision and personal commitment of the entire team was a key to its success.

The innovation award was given in recognition of a unique process the team adopted which played a key role in helping the project meet Government targets on waste and carbon emissions.

Working with Siltbuster Ltd, specialists in waste water management, the team used a patented concrete washwater system onsite.

The innovative RCW (Roadside Concrete Washout) system tackles environmental challenges within the construction industry.

It neutralises the pH level of washwater to the level required by environmental legislation, enabling the water to be used with no harmful effects on the environment.

“We are delighted the project has been recognised in this way,” said David Hogan, Morgan Sindall project director.

“This achievement recognises the entire team effort working together on this nationally important project.

“The success of this project stems from the close relationship we have developed with Airbus and all the supply chain partners.”

Morgan Sindall is working with design and engineering consultancy, Morgan Sindall Professional Services, to deliver the North Factory scheme.

Morgan Sindall Professional Services is designing the facility, providing architectural, civil and structural engineering design and the concept design for the mechanical and electrical services.
