Work on Ewloe ‘super-pub’ to begin this week

BUILDING work on a ‘super-pub’ in Ewloe will get under way within a week – and it is expected to open for business in the summer.

Marston’s Inns, one of Britain’s largest independent pub and brewery groups, agreed a price for a 1.3-acre plot at St David’s Park with land owners Harrow Estates last week.

The chain said the huge family pub, The Running Hare, will create 50-70 jobs and seat up to 180 diners in a warm and comfortable environment.

But some residents are concerned about possible increases in litter, noise, parking problems and anti-social behaviour.

And county councillor Alison Halford, said: “It’s the last green lung in the heart of Ewloe. The residents are very angry, no-one wanted the pub and now it’s going full steam ahead.”

But Adrian Lewis, development director at Harrow Estates, said: “We are delighted that Marston’s have decided to build a pub/restaurant at St David’s Park.

“Their decision is a further endorsement of this very successful mixed use development. The pub will be an excellent amenity for families and businesses.”

Planning permission was granted late last year for the development, despite public opposition and Flintshire County Council planners initially rejecting the proposals.

Adrian Blackburn, acquisitions manager for Marston’s, said: “We are really excited – now the hard work starts to deliver a top quality pub restaurant for residents, families and nearby office workers in Ewloe.

“The aim is to provide up to 55 new permanent full and part-time jobs, and provide a range of menus and drinks – including our award-winning cask ales – which will be on offer to customers when we first open the doors in late summer.”
