Alyn and Deeside MP Mark Tami and Delyn MP David Hanson re-elected in General Election

LABOUR politicians Mark Tami and David Hanson have been re-elected to serve Flintshire.

Mr Tami polled 15,804 votes to take the Alyn and Deeside seat – about 2,000 fewer votes than in 2005, allowing the Conservatives to make serious inroads.

Sandycroft businessman Will Gallagher managed to increase the Conservative vote from 8,896 five years ago to 12,885 – an increase of nearly 30% which saw Mr Tami’s majority slashed by almost three quarters.

Policing Minister Mr Hanson held on too for Delyn, but his majority fell from 8,605 in 2005 to 2,272, while the Conservatives increased their turnout by about 4,000.

The Lib Dems were the surprising losers in Delyn, dropping about 350 votes compared to 2005.

A relieved Mr Hanson said: “I’m very pleased with the increase in the turnout tonight, and obviously very pleased to be returned by the people of Delyn.

“It was a very tough election and I’d like to pay tribute to my fellow candidates.

“The swing of about 5% was in line with what opinion polls appeared to show may happen, but we’ve taken votes off the Lib Dems and Plaid Cymru as people turned to the Labour Party once again as the anti- Conservative solution in Delyn.”

Alyn and Deeside is traditionally one of Labour’s safest seats, yet Mr Tami confessed to being anxious as the ballot boxes were opened.

Apparently referring to his young son Max’s battle with leukaemia, he told the hall at Flint Pavilion when he won: “This has been a very difficult three years for my family and I would like to thank the people of Alyn and Deeside for all their support.”

Conservative Mr Gallagher said the results had exceeded his expectations.

“I was really pleased it is a fantastic result,” he said.

“The Welsh Assembly elections two years ago were a step in the right direction, but this is a giant leap. Now, at the next election, the people of Alyn and Deeside know that it’s genuinely possible to get a Conservative MP.”
