North Wales Police are continuing their domestic violence campaign throughout the World Cup

NORTH Wales Police are continuing to campaign to raise awareness of domestic abuse during the World Cup.

Operation Serenity was launched earlier this month with a specific action plan targeting serial offenders and giving added protection and support to victims.

National statistics show large scale sporting events can sometimes result in an increase in cases of domestic abuse, often fuelled by too much alcohol.

Detective Chief Inspector Wayne Jones said: “Operation Serenity, our World Cup domestic abuse campaign, is continuing as the tournament moves to the next phase.

“Officers have taken positive action against perpetrators and continue to work closely with partners in protecting and supporting victims.

“With the next game on Sunday we would ask people to enjoy the occasion and drink responsibly. We want everyone to enjoy the tournament, have fun and support the team of their choice in a responsible way. However, we will take a firm stance in dealing with domestic abuse offenders.

“Victims of abuse will be given all the support we can offer from the moment they call us. We urge anyone who is a victim of any type of domestic abuse to come forward and report it. Every report will be treated confidentially.”

The force’s action plan includes:

Using analysis and intelligence to identify serial offenders and target them.

Additional police officers and a domestic abuse specialist working at key times before, during and after matches.

Strengthening safety measures for people most at risk.

Working closely with partners in prosecuting offenders and helping victims to get support they need.

Distributing posters in pubs, clubs, shops, cafes and public areas to raise awareness of the campaign.
