Deeside man jailed for ‘disgusting’ driving offence

A HEARTBROKEN man crashed his uncle’s car after discovering his girlfriend was with another man.

Darren Graham Hughes, 27, of Sealand Avenue, Garden City, was jailed for eight months after admitting a string of offences.

At Chester Crown Court on Tuesday Judge Elgan Edwards told him: “This kind of conduct is just simply not going to be tolerated.

“We will not have people driving like that. You should've known better.”

Hughes, a licensed cockler, had taken the vehicle from his uncle’s house in Buckley before driving to Chester.

He was sending a text message to his girlfriend when he ploughed into a Ford Mondeo, causing minor injuries to its occupants.

After getting out to inspect the damage to the vehicle, he got back in the car and sped off through a red light.

Hughes was eventually traced and arrested.

Oliver King, defending, said: “He described his behaviour as disgusting. He didn't think – he just acted compulsively.

“He just wanted to get round to find out why his girlfriend had been with a man, why she should do this to him.

“He says he should have waited at the scene of the accident, but he had one thing on his mind that day and that was to go to his girlfriend’s house.”

Hughes was charged with taking a vehicle without consent, driving dangerously, failing to stop after an accident, failing to report an accident and having no insurance.
