Fire crews tackle Flint paper mill incident

FIREFIGHTERS were sent to a Flintshire paper mill on Friday.

North Wales Fire and Rescue Service was called to SCA Hygiene Products in Oakenholt at 11.52am.

A spokeswoman said the crew was still at the scene at 3.30pm as a precaution because of the large volume of paper at the site.

The incident is thought to have started in a machinery room and the building was completely evacuated.

The company said firefighters were called after employees detected smoke near a ventilation duct. It is believed an electrical fault had caused smouldering, which was quickly extinguished by the on-site safety team before the fire service arrived.

The incident had no effect on production at the mill and no damage was caused to the building, nor were there any injuries.   Mill manager Jim Lang said: "Safety is our number one priority at the mill and it was very good to see how efficiently our fire safety team dealt with this incident.   We would also like to thank the fire service for its very quick response when the automatic alarm to the fire station was activated."
