A TEENAGER from Penyffordd who has successfully battled kidney cancer for the past decade is to hit the heights to thank the hospital which treated her.

Shannon Spicer, 16, a pupil of Castell Alun High School in Hope, was diagnosed with Wilms’ tumour just before her sixth birthday.

She was treated at Alder Hey Hospital in Liverpool, having an operation to remove the kidney and undergoing bouts of chemotherapy.

Now she is looking to do a sponsored 10,000ft skydive.

Shannon, writing on her Justgiving page, said: “The nurses and doctors did everything they could to make me feel better. This included small things such as one nurse making me decorations to brighten up my room and also, because I was young, they took time to play games and stuff with me.

“When I went for my operation to remove my kidney, the doctor made jokes that he was going to make steak and kidney pie with my kidney; this also made me feel better.

“Not only did they make me feel better, they made it easier for my family by accommodating a bungalow just outside of the hospital, as I had to stay there full-time.”

Shannon, who is studying psychology, theatre studies and for a Welsh baccalaureate, said: “As a thanks to Alder Hey Children’s Hospital, I am going to be doing a sponsored skydive and I am going to try and raise as much money as possible so children like me have facilities that can make them feel better physically and emotionally and so they can beat cancer.”

Shannon’s mum Clare Owens said: “Not many people knew Shannon had cancer, it was a very private battle, and the first some heard about it was when she wrote on the Justgiving page and on her Facebook.

“She came out with the news as she wanted to raise money for Alder Hey.

“She has already helped out as she has worked at the Cancer Research centre in Wrexham, but is now busy with her A-levels.”
