Woman charged with street murder

A 31-year-old woman is due to appear in court charged with the murder of a 59-year-old woman in a busy shopping street.

Unemployed Nicola Edgington, from Greenwich, south-east London, will appear at Greenwich Magistrates Court following a fatal stabbing in Bexleyheath.

Edgington, of Ambedkar House, Flavell Mews, is also charged with the attempted murder of a 23-year-old woman, Scotland Yard said.

The 59-year-old victim was named in media reports as law firm accounts manager Sally Hodkin.

Mrs Hodkin, 59, was stabbed by an assailant wielding a butcher's knife on the street in Bexleyheath.

Police have not officially named the victim who was said to have worked at law firm Cunningham Blake. A picture of her from the law firm's website appeared in the Daily Mail.

There was no answer at the practice on Monday night but a voice message said the office was closed due to a bereavement and would reopen later.

Mrs Hodkin died after an attack that had injured a 23-year-old woman waiting at a nearby bus stop.

Mrs Hodkin was understood to have been on her way to work when she was stabbed in the neck. She was believed to have lived locally and was pronounced dead minutes later at 8.41am.
