Your Champions 2011: Holywell man Steve Thomas nominated for sporting award

A COMMUNITY-MINDED Holywell man has been nominated for a Your Champions award.

Steve Thomas, 22, from Pen-y-Ball Hill, was put forward by mum Valerie Thomas for his work with children.

“He has engaged more than 6,000 children in sport this year by running Dragon Sports clubs,” said Valerie. “He has also been selected as a Flintshire Olympic ambassador ahead of London 2012.”

Steve is also one of the people behind the Flintshire Schools Torch Relay Project, which will see the Olympic-style flame pass through every infant, primary and secondary school in the county.

Valerie added: “He had an Olympic torch made at British Aerospace, which he’s taken around all the schools making sure the children get involved and play different sports.”

The transferring of the flame between schools will be done through various physical exercises carried out by pupils, emphasising the importance of physical activity as part of a healthy lifestyle.

Valerie added: “Steve coached at Holywell Town Football Club when he was 17 and throughout university, and as well as the Dragon Sports holiday clubs he does after-school sessions.

“He does a lot of things for children, he likes getting them involved. He’s really enthusiastic about sport and gets other people enthusiastic about it as well.”

Steve is currently considering doing a masters degree before pursuing a career in sport.
