Your Champions 2011: Flint landlady Wendy Houghton nominated

A FLINT landlady has been nominated as Person of the Year in the Trinity Mirror/ScottishPower Your Champions awards.

Wendy Houghton, who runs The Royal Oak, has been nominated by loyal customer Nathan Griffiths, of Coed Onn Road, for her dedication to her community.

“Wendy always goes the extra mile,” said Nathan. “She does a lot of fundraising for good causes and gets everyone in the community together.

“She recently held a full day’s fundraising for Emmy Taylor, the little girl who was burned in the caravan fire.

“The Heroes Day had people in fancy dress, karaoke and games. It really brought everyone together and raised a lot of money.”

Nathan added: “A while ago Wendy also held a homecoming event for Jade Jones, the tae kwon-do champion. She managed to close the street off and everything.

“In just two weeks she managed to organise closing Church Street to traffic and fill it with stalls, a bouncy castle, a carousel, trampolines and burger bars.

“Money raised from the street party went to a range of charities, including Alder Hey Children’s Hospital in Liverpool.

“Flint – and Flintshire – needs more people like her.”
