Your Champions 2011: Former nurse from Buckley nominated as Volunteer of the Year

A BUCKLEY pensioner who gives up her time to hold walks, cycling and t’ai chi classes and first aid courses has been put forward for a community award.

Fran Parry has been nominated as Volunteer of the Year in the Trinity Mirror/ScottishPower Your Champions awards.

Fran, 75, of Ewloe Place in Buckley, took up volunteering 10 years ago after retiring as a nurse.

She said: “My friends were leaders for Walkabout Wrexham and I started walking with them and was asked if I’d like to be a leader.

“Things just snowballed from there and I started doing a lot of other things.”

Fran helps out at Etna Park in Buckley every week where Groundwork Wrexham and Flintshire runs a cycling project and outdoor youth club.

She is also on the community health council and the board of governors at the Countess of Chester Hospital.

Fran runs t’ai chi classes at care home Llys Eleanor in Shotton and in Gwersyllt and is an instructor of Heartstart training – a course in emergency lifesaving skills run by the British Heart Foundation.

She also mentors young people on work placements at Groundwork North Wales.

She said: “I really enjoy what I do and it’s been a great opportunity to meet new people in the area. It’s very varied work and it keeps me busy.”

Fran was nominated by Sarah Thomas from Groundwork.

Sarah said: “Her whole life revolves around helping others, she is an inspiration to people of all age groups and at the age of 75 she has so much energy and enthusiasm, which is contagious.”
