Your Champions 2012: Dedicated volunteer Sheila Stewart nominated for award

A REAL-LIFE Dr Doolittle who has dedicated her life to caring for animals has been nominated for a Trinity Mirror/ScottishPower Your Champions award.

Sheila Stewart founded Capricorn Animal Rescue in 1983 at a site just off the A5104 in Padeswood.

She takes in all kinds of creatures from Conwy and Shropshire to Liverpool, Chester, Wrexham and Flintshire and works tirelessly to keep the sanctuary she set up almost 30 years ago running.

She was nominated for the volunteer of the year award by Jan Caswell of Ellesmere Port.

Jan said: “She has worked tirelessly with the animals in her care, always giving that little bit extra. She goes out of her way to help people with problems, caring for their animals so they have one worry less.

“During the past four years she has raised about £300,000 for the rebuilding and maintenance of the sanctuary. She never gives up, she is always there for an animal in need, always organising the next fundraiser, always willing to visit Brownies, Cubs, schools and other groups to spread the word on animal care.

“Sheila is totally dedicated in her work, doesn’t keep ‘office hours’ and doesn’t take holidays – the continued care of the animals and the success of the sanctuary is her first priority.”
