A MUM-OF-FOUR who has battled illness to help children in her hometown has been nominated for a Your Champions award.
Helen Conway, who has four daughters herself, was put forward in the champion person category by friend and neighbour Angela Thomas for ‘her tireless work with Flint’s young people’.
Angela said Helen has struggled with her health in recent years and is still refusing to put her feet up after a gall bladder operation in July – instead continuing her voluntary work.
“Helen has been running the Mums and Tots group in Flint Evangelical Church for nearly 20 years and has helped a huge number of mums, dads and grandparents,” said Angela, who lives near Helen on First Avenue.
“She is always in good spirits, despite her recent ill health. She organises lots of fundraising activities, including the Barnardo’s Big Toddle.
“Another recent sponsored walk was held in aid of helping Emmy Taylor, who was seriously burned in a caravan fire which resulted in the tragic deaths of her granddad and uncle. And Helen also organises the packing and collection of Christmas shoeboxes for the annual Operation Christmas Child appeal.”
Helen is also a former chairwoman of the Friends of the Gwynedd School.
Angela added: “As well as the preschool kids, Helen also works with teenagers through the weekly youth club.
“She has helped and advised so many young mums and as a result has made a great number of friends in the community.”
