Airbus UK Broughton: Wingmen stun strong Morecambe side

AIRBUS picked up their best win of the pre-season, defeating League Two opposition Morecambe at The Airfield on Monday.

Ian Sheridan scored the only goal of the game in the first half against a strong Shrimps side.

First-team coach Gareth Owen said the performance was very pleasing: “During pre-season you don’t look at who your opposition are, you’re looking at the fitness of the players.

“We played a lot of our fringe players, gave them the chance to impress and not one of them didn’t do their job.”

Airbus started brightly with two early attempts as Sheridan shot straight at Morecambe keeper Shaun Routledge and Ross Rule narrowly missed the target.

In the 32nd minute the home side took a surprise lead when Andy Moran found Ian Sheridan in the left-hand side of penalty area.

This time the striker beat Routledge with a curling shot into the far corner of the net.

Airbus saw out the half but shortly after the restart the visitors went close with captain Niall Cowperthwaite hitting the side netting from a corner.

With 12 minutes remaining Alex Salmon headed wide for Morecambe but Airbus hit back with Mark Jones and Moran both going close.

Salmon had two more late chances to equalise for the Shrimps but a save from Niki-Lee Bulmer and a block from Tommy Holmes helped Airbus see out the game to claim victory.

Defender Holmes signed from The New Saints this week and coach Owen is excited by his arrival.

“He's hugely experienced, an ex-pro who has played European football,” he said.

“I think he’s the missing piece of the jigsaw for what we’re trying to build here.”

The Wingmen were at home to Midland Alliance side Ellesmere Rangers as the Chronicle went to press last night.

They then face a Wolverhampton Wanderers XI at the Airfield next Monday (7.45pm).

The game was arranged as part of the transfer of young striker Jake Cassidy to the Premier League side last summer.
