Airbus UK Broughton: Wingmakers share spoils with Port Talbot Town after opening day jitters

CRAIG Harrison and Gareth Thomas saw their new-look Airbus side kick off the Corbett Sports Welsh Premier League with a battling draw.

Fresh faces filled the Wingmakers side with Danny Taylor, Adam Worton, Glenn Rule, Tommy Holmes, Mike Hayes and Craig Whitfield all starting the game while at the other end, former Airbus keeper Kristian Rogers returned in the Town goal.

A nervy start for Airbus allowed the visitors to create a number of opportunities that keeper Niki-Lee Bulmer managed to block.

Glenn Rule, named Airbus captain, saw his frustrations spill over on 16 minutes as he was cautioned for a tackle on Dylan Blain.

Still Town pressed and scrutinised Bulmer, former Wrexham midfielder Matty Crowell asking questions of him with some fierce shots.

Against the run of play, Ian Sheridan raced into the Town box and was brought down, only for the referee to wave away the penalty appeal.

As half-time arrived the sides were still goalless as early-season jitters seemed to affect both sides.

After the restart Bulmer pulled off a terrific save from a close-range Dylan Blain header.

But the danger was not over. The corner which resulted was swung in and Paul Cochlin rose to make it 1-0 to the Steelmen on 64 minutes.

The lead did not last long however. Just five minutes later Airbus had a corner of their own.

Adam Worton whipped the ball in and Danny Desormeaux headed for goal.

Town cleared it off the line but Mike Hayes – the former Gap Connah’s Quay and Bala striker – formally opened his Airbus account with a three-yard tap-in.

It was enough to seal the points, as both sides shook off the ring rust.

In stoppage-time Kristian Rogers made a superb save from a long-range Ian Sheridan shot but a draw was a fair result in the end.

The Wingmakers travel to face Prestatyn Town tomorrow (7.30pm).
