Airbus UK Broughton: Bala Town defeat spells end of top-six dream

Airbus UK 1 Bala Town 2

THE Wingmakers will spend the rest of the season in the bottom half of the Welsh Premier League after failing to achieve their top-six goal.

Defeat to Bala on Monday, in front of the live S4/C cameras, made it mathematically impossible for Airbus to break into the top six before the league splits in two.

The Flintshire side will spend the final months of the campaign in the Relegation Conference, rather than rubbing shoulders with the league’s leading sides.

Airbus secretary Phil Bailey said: “The simple fact is we weren’t good enough. It’s hard to find any positives.”

The Wingmakers have never won a game on live TV and did not look like breaking their hoodoo on Monday.

Bala took the lead just before the hour mark when Tommy Holmes was adjudged to have brought Lee Hunt down in the area and the striker dispatched the resulting penalty.

Mark Jones doubled the Lakesiders’ lead after 73 minutes when he thundered a stunning 20-yard free-kick past Nikki-Lee Bulmer.

Mike Hayes pulled a goal back against his old club but the Airbus rally had arrived too late in the day.

Airbus: Bulmer, Taylor, Worton, Allen (G Cadwallader 64), Holmes, G Rule, M Cadwallader, Edwards, Sheridan, Hayes, Hope (Griffiths 64). Subs: Parry, McCartney, Owen.

Attendance: 282.

Airbus are not due to play again until they host on Bala Town in the League Cup on Friday, January 20 (7.30pm). Their league campaign resumes in February.

Aberystwyth Town have had one point deducted from their Welsh Premier League tally for fielding an ineligible player.
