Football: Champions Gap Connah’s Quay finish Huws Gray Alliance season with five-star performance

GAP Connah’s Quay produced a five-star performance to sign off their 2010-11 championship- winning Huws Gray Alliance campaign.

Nomads eventually finished nine points clear of nearest challengers Rhyl and collected the title trophy on Tuesday before going on to beat Flintshire neighbours Rhydymwyn 5-0.

Hotshot Gary O’Toole was also honoured before the match, receiving the golden boot award for his magnificent 37 league goals.

The opening goal came after 18 minutes when player-boss Mark McGregor’s headed effort was turned around for a corner and, from the resulting flag-kick, Andy Alston rose highest to nod Nomads in front.

O’Toole then doubled the advantage on 28 minutes when Ben Collins was brought down in the area as he lined up to shoot, and the top scorer converted from the penalty spot.

And the third goal came just seconds before the interval when, following good build-up play between O’Toole and Sam McNutt, Jamie Petrie fired home after Rhyd keeper Leon Bimpson denied McNutt.

The visitors then kept Connah’s Quay at bay until the final 15 minutes when Danny Forde played a clever one-two with James McIntosh before unleashing a fierce shot into the roof of the net.

The final goal of a glorious campaign came in the 86th minute after Stuart Scheuber played in Petrie, who squared for the unmarked Ben Collins to roll into an unguarded goal.

Meanwhile, Nomads left it late to secure victory in their final away match of the season against second-bottom Rhayader Town on Saturday.

James McIntosh fired the visitors into a 13th-minute lead but Town levelled on 25 minutes.

The breakthrough only came with three minutes remaining when Dean Thurston struck, and O’Toole made it safe as the clocked ticked down.
