Cricket: Flintshire ends Denbighshire’s streak in Twenty20 finals

FLINTSHIRE claimed a 53-run victory over rivals Denbighshire in the final of the third annual North Wales Twenty20 competition at Corwen.

Denbighshire were bidding for a hat-trick of victories but Flintshire had other ideas.

Having earlier beaten Merionethshire after posting 161-4, skipper Martin Burger (Northop Hall) scoring 65, clubmate Michael Barnes 29 and Mitch Van Wyk (Connah’s Quay) 22no.

Merionethshire could only scrape 83 in reply, Connah’s Quay’s Robbie Bennett grabbing 4-10.

In the final Flintshire were the underdogs but took the game to their opponents and county neighbours, hitting 156-7.

The score was mainly thanks to the county’s Northop Hall trio of Alex Smith (37), Burger (22) and Barnes (21).

Denbighshire captain Nick Flack of Chirk claimed 2-17 and fellow Chirk player Jamie Beale 2-23.

After the changeover Flack cracked 35, but he and Arthur Thomas (Ruthin), with 24, could only take Denbighshire to 103 all out from 17 overs.

Robbie Bennett claimed 3-26 to secure Flintshire’s first Twenty20 title success and end Denbighshire’s dominance.
