Cricket: Village Cup quest continues for Northop

RICHARD Walker put in an impressive shift at the crease to keep Northop’s Persimmon Village Cup bid on-course at Compstall on Sunday.

Having progressed so far in last year’s competition, they were just three games from the showpiece final at Lord’s, Northop are once more pinning their hopes on a good run in the tournament.

And having had to surrender home advantage and been put in to bat the Flintshire side were up against it and when they lost opener David Foulkes for just one run, the task became tougher.

But Harry Lewis supplied a solid 38 before swashbuckling Walker came to the crease.

He bludgeoned his way to 81 as Northop closed on 228-8.

That was only half the job, however, as Compstall still had to respond.

That response was tempered by some fine bowling from spinner Harry Lewis who twisted and turned his way to 4-28.

He was backed up by Jonathan Haupfleisch with 3-33 and Jack Darcy with 2-30 as Compstall were dismissed for 165.

Northop, who conceded their Welsh Cup tie at Llandudno, face Birch Vale and Thornsett this Sunday.
