Cricket: Northop on brink of promotion

NORTHOP are almost guaranteed promotion to the top flight after their first game of the weekend was abandoned and their second cancelled.

Northop batted for 18 overs at Menai Bridge 2nds on Saturday in the North Wales League Division One and reached 86-2 before heavy showers forced the umpires to call time on the match.

And their county derby at Halkyn failed to even start thanks to a waterlogged pitch.

It means with two games remaining Northop are 31 points clear of their nearest rivals and almost beyond reach in second place.

Halkyn meanwhile did not wield a bat in anger all weekend after a waterlogged square prevented their Saturday match at Bangor 2nds even starting.

Robbed of the chance of bagging some vital extra points, Halkyn’s Division One status remains in serious peril.

They reside only three points ahead of Bethesda – who occupy the final relegation spot.

The two sides meet this weekend in an all-or-nothing clash.

If Bethesda win, Halkyn must get a better result than them on the final day to have any hope of survival.

If Halkyn beat Bethesda, they will be virtually guaranteed safety.
