Cricket: Halkyn survive relegation battle

HALKYN escaped the drop zone on the final day to ensure they take their place in North Wales League Division One in 2012.

They entertained doomed Bersham who were hoping to drag Halkyn into Division Two with them.

Elsewhere Bethesda were hoping to climb above Halkyn by beating Llanrwst, but that match was cancelled.

Halkyn were unaware however and set about winning their match to save their season.

Bersham batted first and only a phenomenal batting display from opener Neil Thomas to make 153 gave them any hope after Halkyn’s bowlers wiped out the rest of the seven-strong team, Kevin Jones claiming 3-13.

Halkyn had a job to do and Matthew Williams (75) and Maelor Thomas (52no) propelled them to 176-3 and victory.

Already promoted to the Premier Division, NORTHOP ended the campaign with a disappointing loss to former promotion rivals Gresford.

Opening the batting Northop made 189-9dec, Jack Darcy scoring 50 and Darren Williams 40.

But a mammoth 112 from Matthew Cree helped Gresford reach 193-3 and earn a victory.
