Cricket: Northop juniors claim triple crown

NORTHOP’S young stars completed a stunning hat-trick of triumphs in the North Wales Junior Finals at Mochdre on Sunday.

The Flint Road under 11, U13s and U15s teams had already been crowned league and play-off winners in their respective age groups in North East Wales.

And they all won their finals matches to bring home the champions’ silverware.

Northop CC chairman Mike Hughes said: “I would like to thank all the parents, players and coaches for the wonderful achievement.

“The coaches and players put an awful lot of hard work in this season – weather permitting – and to see it all come to fruition made all the efforts worthwhile.

“We have an excellent record of producing good junior cricketers and, apart from three or four, all our senior playing members have come through the ranks and the achievements on Sunday auger well for a very bright future at Northop CC.”

In recent years the club has seen 10 boys represent Wales at a number of age groups and other youngsters play for Cheshire and Shropshire.

The U11s, coached by Ushan Andrady and Daniel Nicholson and managed by Martin Hayes, defeated Llandudno by 27 runs in a pairs format.

Ben Beaver claimed two wickets and Joshua Andrady and Luke Price one apiece as they restricted Llandudno to 73-5 before Wales players Andrady (18) and man-of-the-match Beaver (14no) eased Northop to 90-3 to repeat their success of 2011 against the same opposition and retain the crown.

The U13s won the toss and elected to bat against Gresford, scoring 127-5 off 20 overs with Rob Alderson (43) and Andy Oates (30) leading the way.

Again Josh Andrady (4-16), man-of-the-match Oates (2-36) and Alderson (1-26) dismissed the Wrexham team to 122 to seal a five-run win.

To complete the treble, the U15s scored 114-5 from 20 overs, Scott Oates making 36no while skipper Tom Blackwell also struck 36. Opponents Mochdre made 91-4, Niall Roberts taking 2-6.
