Cricket: Pontblyddyn honour star performers at end-of-season awards

DESPITE appalling weather devastating the cricket season, there were still some great achievements to celebrate at Pontblyddyn CC.

The first XI, hard hit by the wet conditions, finished in a comfortable mid-table position in the North Wales League Premier Division and the 2nds, in their first ever season in Division One, stayed up in the last, nailbiting game of the season.

The club’s links with local schools also grew and a talented crop of young players began to come through for the future.

The achievements of the season were celebrated at the annual presentation evening, where prizes were handed out by Pontblyddyn vice chairman and national England and Wales Cricket Board disability manager Ian Martin.

The big award of the night was the Leading Batsman prize.

That went to Glenn Chambers, who scored 551 runs including two centuries, one of which was an unbeaten 127 against Northop, the highest single score at the club all season.

Chambers also claimed 28 wickets with the ball.

Overseas player Marcel Frenzel received a special mention after scoring 471 runs and was crowned Leading Wicket Taker with 35 wickets.

He also took the award for the best performance with 7-21 against Mochdre.

The award for the Most Improved Young Player in a Senior Team went to John Stanforth who scored 261 runs for the 2nds with a top score of 74 not out and the Most Improved Junior award went to Gethin Thomas.

He who topped the 3rd XI averages with 192 runs and a top score of 72no.

Pontblyddyn are looking for new players at both senior and junior level for 2013 and are also hunting for umpires.

Anyone interested in playing or learning more about becoming an umpire is asked to contact Tony or Karen Moss on 01244 550108.

At the North East Wales Junior Cricket League awards at Brymbo CC Pontblyddyn under 15s received the North East Wales U15s indoor league crown to add to their second place behind Northop in the regular league.
