Football: Wales squad annnounced for Gary Speed memorial match against Costa Rica

THE Wales squad has been announced for Wednesday’s Gary Speed Memorial match against Costa Rica.

The game could have marked the first game in charge for new Wales coach Chrus Coleman, a friend of the Mancot-born legend, but while he has had input into the selections, he will allow Speed’s assistants Osian Roberts and Raymond Verheijen to take charge at the Cardiff City Stadium on the night.

After Speed was found dead at his home in Chester last November aged just 42, there was an outpouring of emotion from Welsh players past and present, and many of them will be at the game to pay tribute.

Among the squad are Connah’s Quay goalkeeper Wayne Hennessey of Wolves, with former Buckley Town player Danny Collins, now at Stoke City, and Hawarden’s Andy Dorman, currently on loan at Bristol Rovers, both on the standby list.

Tottenham’s Gareth Bale and Craig Bellamy, who was given time off by Liverpool to grieve for Speed, are also in the squad.

The game will kick-off at 7.45pm and will act as both a tribute and a warm-up for the autumn World Cup Qualifiers and will be televised on Sky Sports 2.
