Football: Saltney Town narrowly miss out on memorable giantkilling

SALTNEY Town almost launched an historic comeback in the NEWFA Challenge Cup.

They trailed to Welsh National League Premier Division hosts Brymbo 3-0 before half time and lost Matt Howard to a red card before a Marc Gunther strike just before the break offered Division One Saltney a lifeline.

Matt Wintle struck in the second half to threaten a revival from Town but Brymbo held on to win 3-2.

League Cup finalists Hawarden Rangers continued their great form by knocking out Venture 3-2 after extra time.

Nathan Auty scored directly form a corner to give Rangers the lead but Venture equalised.

Danny Sullivan restored Rangers’ lead but Venture hit back again before, in extra time, Charlie McDade header home the winner for Rangers.

In the Premier Division Rhydymwyn closed the gap on leaders Mold Alex with a stunning 10-0 win over Johnstown.

Hat-tricks from Dan Drazdauskas and sub Stuart Hayes plus goals from Lee Reynolds, Tom Evans, Darren Pritchard and Dave Gleave secured the result, which brings Rhyd a little closer to regaining the top spot they held for so long this season.

Current leaders Mold Alex could manage only a disappointing 0-0 draw at Llay Welfare.

Coedpoeth United suffered a close 3-2 defeat to visiting Penyffordd.
