Football: Mold Alex miss out on chance to return to top of Welsh National League

MOLD Alex closed the gap on Welsh National League leaders Rhydymwyn but failed to take full advantage of their rivals latest slip.

Rhyd suffered a 1-0 defeat to bogey team Gresford Athletic as Huw Jones scored in the 65th minute.

Alex reduced the gap to one point at the top as they drew at Penyffordd.

In fact they almost tripped up themselves as Simon Smith and Sam Richardson put the home side 2-0 up.

But a late rally from the Alex – whose reserve side clinched the Reserves and Colts Division title on Saturday – saw Chris Newman find the net before Simon Hulse slotted home a penalty to salvage a point.

Hawarden Rangers’ title ambitions were also slowed by a 1-1 draw at home to FC Cefn.

Paul Mazzarella gave Cefn the lead on the half-hour before Rangers levelled on the stroke of half time.

In Division One Saltney Town kept the pressure on top side Borras Park Albion as they devastated Llanuwchllyn 9-2.

Jake Gibbons grabbed five goals with Efan Williams, Andy Johnson, Sean Hughes and Lee Ashbrooke completing the rout.

Castell Alun, in cracking form of late, were also in the goals crushing Penley 6-2 on the road with goals from Danny Hughes (3), Tom Crewe (2) and Dave Bullough.

New Brighton had limited joy against Acrefair Youth however, as the sides played out a 1-1 draw.
