Football: Hawarden Rangers devastate Rhydymwyn in NEWFA Challenge Cup

HAWARDEN Rangers sprung a surprise 4-1 defeat on hosts and Welsh National League Premier Division leaders Rhydymwyn in the quarter final of the NEWFA Challenge Cup.

Rhyd held the lead at the break thanks to a Lee Reynolds goal but Rangers’ Danny Sullivan smashed a hat-trick in the second half to give his side control and Andy Watkins completed Rhyd’s cup exit with Rangers’ fourth late on.

In the Premier Division there was more bad news for Rhyd as main challengers MOLD ALEX came from behind to beat Coedpoeth United 2-1.

John Griffiths put home side Coed in front but a penalty for a bad foul on Nick Pollitt saw Simon Hulse slot home to equalise before, in the second half, Adam Renshaw secured all three points with a shot form 18 yards.

Johnstown earned a 1-1 draw at PENYFFORDD after Simon Smith ghad given Peny the lead.

In Division One SALTNEY TOWN looke ever more likely to secure propmotion to the top flight after crushing Glynceiriog 8-0.

In their final home game of the season the Bordermen benefited from an Andy Johnson opener after 20 minutes.

Matty Howard doubled the lead on 29 minutes and Marc Gunther added number three soon after.

In the second half Liam Ashbrook extended Saltney’s lead with Tom Price, Johnson, Evan Wright and Shaun Hughes completing a big win.
