Football: Fortress Llanrhaeadr falls to Buckley Town

AFTER delivering a few harsh words to his players following their loss the previous week, Gareth Thomas was much more pleased after Buckley Town became the first side to win at Llanrhaeadr this season in the Huws Gray Alliance.

Thomas made six changes to his squad and straight from the kick off it was Buckley who forced the tempo.

After only five minutes Carl Lamb allowed a good chance to go begging when he screwed his shot wide and two minutes later Reece Norton saw his effort saved by Conner Lee in the home goal.

Even from the penalty sport Lamb saw his attempt saved after Derek Taylor was brought down in the area.

But relentless Buckley pressure told on 24 minutes when Norton chased down a clearance and saw his shot his the post.

The ball rebounded to Lamb who made sure the ball found the net.

The second half saw the home side attempt to recover but they lacked penetration until, on 55 minutes, a poor headed clearance allowed Llanrhaeader’s Alun Jones to equalise.

Buckley immediately regained the lead however, Ant Williams playing in Adam Eden to fire home from 20 yards.

The game became stretched and only a superb save by Ben Jones on 65 minutes kept Buckley in front.

The visitors continued to press however but only after the sending off of home keeper Lee, for upending Norton when he was clean through, did Buckley grab their third.

Sub Phil Molyneux slotted a pass through for Anthony Williams to blast the ball home a minute from time to complete the result.

Afterwards Thomas said: “It’s never an easy ground to go to with it being tight and narrow, but the players’ performance was first class.

“We made some big decisions with the team and we now need to start putting a decent run together in the league as it’s still tight apart from the top three, who appear to be pulling away.”
