Flintshire Freeze 0Fife Flyers 12
THE long trip down from Kirkcaldy in Scotland proved worthwhile for the Flyers as they lived up to their name, flying from the start to dominate the Freeze in their Northern League encounter.
As the visiting side rattled in four goals in the first period, the writing was on the wall at Deeside Ice Rink.
And despite a few forays by the Freeze into the opposing half – James Parsons and Chris Jones had shots saved by the Fife goalie and Jones hit the post – the opening third saw the Freeze manage just five shots on goal compared to 24 faced by keeper Graeme Bird.
The Freeze locked down the second period, allowing the Flyers just one scoring chance – albeit a fine unassisted goal inside two minutes by Darryl Venters.
Some indiscipline from Fife saw the Freeze benefit from penalties at one stage they had a five players to three advantage.
Play became more even and Chris Jones had a couple of attempts saved and a second shot came back off the post as the period ended 5-0.
With the game out of reach, Freeze blooded some of their youngsters.
The Flyers were soon 9-0 up following some scrappy goals and one from a rebound off the netting behind Bird.
The Freeze keeper made some heroic saves – including one with his head as he was spreadeagled in the crease – only to see Fife wriggle in their 10th from behind the net.
He plucked another fine save from the air but was blocked when the Flyers got their 11th.
Chris Jones took play down the ice for a one-on-one with the Fife netminder only to see his shot pushed wide.
The Flyers took the play back to the Freeze’s net and scored goal number 12 when a shot straight at Bird’s chest managed to drift over the line.
The Raptors, Flintshire’s under 10s team, notched up an impressive 19-1 win against Nottingham Sherwood on Saturday afternoon at Deeside Ice Rink.
Goals came courtesy of James Shaw (6), Eric Tuft (5), Kieran Clarkson (3), Michael Speare (2), Louis Morgan, Liam Canty and Thomas Byrne.
