Boxing: Dan Melia will hit Windy City with his best shot
A RISING amateur boxing star who has already been crowned a national champion has been given the chance to fight Stateside.
Chester Police ABC welterweight prospect Dan Melia, from Buckley, is one of a select number of young boxers picked for the Police Community Clubs of Great Britain squad that will compete in Chicago, Illinois, next month.
Former Buckley Elfed High School student Dan will put into practise the skills which made him a Welsh novice champion when he goes to one of the USA’s boxing strongholds, the famed Golden Gloves club in the Windy City.
The 18-year-old, who combines his training with working part-time at Asda in Queensferry, will be in the ring on November 6 and 7.
Dan joined Chester Police ABC after his dad Mike Melia got involved with the club, which also goes by the name of Chester Boxers, at Lightfoot Business Centre in the city.
Mike, who works for Cheshire Police, said: “Dan is really looking forward to it.
“He’ll be up against good quality fighters so he knows he’ll have to be on top of his game.”
