Hockey: Northop Hall Hockey Club begin season with tight defeat to Wrexham Glyndwr

THERE was disappointment for Northop Hall men’s squads at the start of their respective seasons.

The first team bullied off their North Hockey Men’s League Division Two campaign with a narrow 3-2 loss away to Wrexham Glyndwr.

Defeat was even more disappointing as the sides met just one week before, when Hall triumphed 4-3 in the North Wales Premier Cup.

This time, Hall keeper Mike Burgoyne made several fine saves but the hosts found a way through.

Neil Worrall made amends by equalising from a short corner before the break.

A couple of injuries hampered Hall, who had only 11 players to pick from.

Wrexham took the lead again but Nick Critchley, reacting quickly to a rebound off the keeper, levelled the scores.

But with a draw in sight, Wrexham fired the winner with five minutes remaining.

Rhys Price got on the scoresheet for Hall 2nds in Division Four, but they succumbed 3-1 at home to Windermere’s first team.

Hall 3rds were beaten 7-2 at home to Crewe Vagrants 3rds, while the 4th XI drew 4-4 away to Sale 4ths.

The ladies squads fared better, as the first team recorded a 2-1 win at home to Warrington Ladies in Cheshire Women’s League Division Two.

The Ladies 2nd XI drew 0-0 at Bebington Ladies 1sts.
