Badminton: Jane Givelin heroics in vain as Airbus win top-versus-bottom Llanferres A clash

JANE Givelin served up a sparkling display for Llanferres A in their top-versus-bottom North East Wales League Division One clash with Airbus.

Givelin teamed up with Claire Halestrap to win the match of the evening by two games, a first ladies clash against Kim Rogers and Laura Stokes.

Givelin’s heroics, however, could not stop high-flying Airbus from running out 7-1 winners.

Having had to concede two matches after turning up a player short, Northop overcame the odds to secure a 4-4 draw at home to title favourites Flint Phoenix.

Chris Foster and Sheila Henry starred for Northop.

They played superbly to outlast the talented pairing of Rachel Madeley and Katie Roberts, winning 30-29 in the third game.

Mold B beat fellow strugglers Broughton 6-2 in Division Two.

Emma Hilton and Chris Preston were in top form for Mold, trouncing Carol Hughes and Lorna Kernighan-Moore in two games of the highest quality.

Rossett A boosted their championship challenge with an 8-0 whitewash of Broughton, for whom Diane Fardoe and Ian Price went down fighting in the first mixed against Gregg Hilditch and Sarah Roberts.

Rossett B recorded a 5-3 victory at home to mid-table rivals Buckley.

Ross Tomlinson was voted player of the match after winning both of his events.

Tomlinson and Jeanette Davies edged their fourth mixed encounter with Rob Bishop and Lindsay Wilding 21-18 in the third.

Flint Phoenix B strengthened their position at the top of Division Three with a clinical 5-3 win at struggling Llanferres B.

First mixed proved to be a tense affair as Alex Graham and Rowena Spencer beat young gun Hugo Williams and June Healey in three games.

Mold C and Ruthin C slipped further behind Flint Phoenix B after sharing a 4-4 draw.

Mold’s youngsters Kyran Van Der Koori and Rhys Templeman were named joint players of the match even though their lack of experience caused them to lose out to John Styles and Karl Young at second men’s.

Only a battling performance by Steve Tibbett and Rhian Mills avoided the whitewash as Buckley (scratch) crashed out of the North East Wales League Challenge Cup 15-1 to Flint Phoenix B (+7).

Tibbett and Mills produced a determined display of controlled tactics to share the spoils with Sean Jones and Gwenda Moorcroft at third mixed 20-21, 21-13.
