Badminton: Record entry in North East Wales Badminton Association’s annual senior handicap tournament

A RECORD entry of players took part in the North East Wales Badminton Association’s annual senior handicap tournament.

Members of the Airbus, Connah’s Quay, Deeside, Flint Phoenix, Llanferres and Rossett clubs did battle at the Deeside Leisure Centre event, which was organised by David Hewitt.

Luke Tanner and Anneke Perrett (-8) played superb, error-free badminton to beat Ben Travers and Katie Roberts (-5) in two pulsating games to win a tense mixed doubles final.

Simon Ellis and Vicky Jones (-8) went down 15-10, 10-15, 15-14 to Tanner and Perrett in the semi-finals.

Travers and Roberts showed great court speed and placement in their 15-12 15-14 last-four victory over Gregg Hilditch and Sarah Roberts (-5).

The men’s doubles final was an inspired one as Daniel Roberts and Travers (-6) just got the better of Steve Aylott and Nick Stokes (-8) 21-17, 21-19.

Aylott and Stokes had produced a dazzling display to beat Matty Burrows and Dan Ellis (-2) in the semis.

A change in tactics proved crucial for Daniel Roberts and Travers in their last-four clash as they came from behind to overcome Chris Scutter and James Hulley (-2) 18-21, 21-19, 21-18.

Ladies doubles winners Ellen Liddle and Sarah Roberts (-2) were in scintillating form.

Runners-up in the final were Izzy Cain and Perrett (-2) who, despite playing badminton of the highest quality, just lost out in the final by a single game.
