THERE was a hole-in-one as more than 100 members and friends came out in force for new Mold Golf Club captain Roger Howes’ drive-in.
After a quick drink in the clubhouse, Howes made his way to the first tee to get his reign under way.
After driving-in, Howes and club champion Iestyn Ingman took on new vice captain Tony Moore and club professional Craig Tudor in a match which went to the wire.
Despite a late charge from Moore and Tudor, Mr Captain and Ingman managed to hold on for the victory.
Howes, alongside Mold’s new lady captain Jane Scholes, has chosen Help for Heroes (H4H) to be his charity for the year.
Howes’ son Gareth is in the armed forces and is currently serving in Afghanistan.
Members and friends guessed the length of the new captain’s drive to raise money for H4H. The winner was John Green with 142 yards.
Eighty-two members then took part in a four ball better ball match, the highlight of which was a hole-in-one on the 16th for Timmy Davies.
Rob Stacey and Stuart Ferguson finished first with 45 points, followed by John Stephens and Richard Hughes in second (42) and Mike Worsnip and Barry Haig (42) in third.
Gareth Evans won the nearest the pin on the ninth prize. Richard Hughes struck the longest drive on the 18th.
After the action came to a close, the club’s new caterer Carl Willis put on a splendid hot pot.
Mold Golf Club’s new lady captain Jane Scholes raised about £600 for Children in Need at her drive-in.
The ladies had great fun, dressing in pyjamas and nightwear to play a 12 hole competition which was won by Debbie Barton, Sue Jackson and Mags Southern with 51 points.
