Rugby union: Shotton Steel go through in North Wales Cup

SHOTTON Steel progressed in the North Wales Cup on Saturday, expelling Swalec League Division Three North hosts Rhosllanerchrugog 17-5.

But League Two North outfit Shotton were caught cold and found themselves a try down early on.

Good defensive work then held the Steelmen at bay but they eventually broke through as second row and man-of-the-match Dan Crossley managed to make it over the line despite attempts to hold him up.

A successful conversion made it 7-5 to the Steelmen and they never looked back. A chip through was collected by Shotton leading to scrum-half Nicky Wood grounding to make it 14-5.

Rhos plugged away in the mud and were awarded a penalty which was unsuccessful.

The second half saw Rhos dig in to stifle the Steelmen but Shotton extended their lead with a penalty which proved enough to finish the game off.

On Saturday all three Flintshire clubs are scheduled for league action, with Division One North strugglers Mold going to leaders Nant Conwy, Shotton entertaining Denbigh in North Two and Flint travelling to Porthmadog in North Three.
