Your Champions: Dave Evans nominated for Sporting Champion of the Year award

A KEY figure in the formation and running of a Saltney sporting organisation has been nominated for this year’s Trinity Mirror/ ScottishPower Your Champions 2010 awards.

Dave Evans spends much of his spare time training and coaching at the Deva Academy Boxing Club, based in the Central Trading Estate, Marley Way, in addition to a full-time job.

Veteran boxing coach Tommy Dix, who helps out at the centre, nominated Dave, a councillor at Saltney Town Council, for the honour.

He said: “It not only gives me great pleasure but it is also an honour for me to nominate Dave Evans for Sporting Champion of the Year.

“Dave, though he would never admit it, is the key figure and lynchpin of Deva Academy Boxing Club. Not only does he organise training and coaching on five/six days a week but also holds down a full-time job at Vauxhall.

“This man is loved by not just the members of Deva Academy but is also one of the pillars of our society.

“Many times people go to Dave with problems and the only word in Dave’s vocabulary at such times is help.

“He goes to endless trouble to see that those who represent the club receive the best possible chance of success.”

He added: “In nearly 60 years being involved in boxing I have met some outstanding people and I can honestly say without fear of contradiction Dave Evans has no peers.

“Not only is Dave a wonderful coach and motivator but he is also a father figure, a brother and confidante to all at the club.”

Dave said: “It’s a great honour to be nominated – all the kids and what everyone is doing at the facility put in the effort and we have got fantastic results.”
