Alyn and Deeside: UKIP aiming to overtake Plaid Cymru in General Election

THE UKIP candidate for Alyn and Deeside is desperate to pick up 5% of the votes cast in the constituency – so he can claim back his £500 deposit.

James Howson, 21, is hoping to overtake Plaid Cymru to finish fourth behind the main three parties.

In 2005 UKIP got 2.6% of the votes in Alyn and Deeside, but unless they reach 5% candidates lose the money they stump up to stand for election.

Mr Howson said: “I’ve been so busy helping out in constituencies all over Wales, but yesterday (Wednesday) I visited 1,000 houses in Deeside.”

He added: “I hope to get over 5% so I can get my deposit back.”

Mr Howson said he ‘would love to beat’ Plaid Cymru candidate Maurice Jones. He predicted victory for his Labour rival Mark Tami.
